where does it go?

From Halloween until after the first week of January,

time always moves at warp speed for me.

So many fun things to do & see with family & friends!

BYB is also always super busy & exciting starting in the fall.

The holiday orders, college football orders, regular orders

+ BYB shows...

Christmas flew by so fast this year!

We celebrated early with our family in Georgia...

we got to see this GIANT, real gingerbread house...

it smelled so yummy in there!

but according to my little tasters...it did not taste as good as it smelled!

(do you like their turtlenecks? thinking of adding them

to our BYB's styles for next Fall. That is one of our

Simply Said Monograms printed on them)

Christmas morning...

they loved their Back Yard Buddies!! : )

and KAYAKS!...

Then off to Alabama to do Christmas with family there

& to celebrate our oldest baby's 7 Birthday!!!

I can not believe he is 7!

Of course for the 4th year in a row our

little nature boy wanted

a "camo birthday at the farm with his cousins"...

scavenger hunts...

fishing

marshmellow bow & arrows,

bb guns, campfire roasted hot dogs & smores,

pinata, presents, cake, tractor rides &

lizard catching,

make for a happy 7 year old boy!!...

Then New Years...

A whirlwind of fun & excitement

with family & friends

over the past 4 months!

When things slow down a bit the first week in January

I always start to think about my priorities

Because work is always so hectic in the Fall,

it makes it fall in the wrong order a lot of the time.

This year's New Years Resolution:

Keep things in this order:

• God

• Family

• Work

Even so, we have LOTS of very exciting things coming

to Back Yard Baby in 2012!!!

Can't wait to share it with you!

Bringing some new friends on board to Back Yard Baby,

I am hoping will help me to stick to my resolution!! ; )

Fun Holiday Kid Crafts

so in my spare time...

(i never sleep! too much fun stuff to do, so little time!)

I helped with one of our children's

school Christmas party last week & want to share some fun

holiday activities with you.

Snowman Ornament...

so cute & the kids loved making them!

all ya need is:

• an empty plastic bottle

(juice, water...anything that would make a good snowman body)

• small cut pieces of white tissue paper

• small cut pieces of black tissue paper

• black buttons

• ribbon or fabric for the scarf

• photo of your child for the face

• orange felt (or construction paper) rolled & glued for the nose

• we also added a jingle bell to the hat &

added a small cut piece of green raffia to make it look like a holly berry

• a loop of string for hanging on tree

to assemble:

• add a little water to some Elmer's glue and brush it on the bottle

one section at a time

• stick on the white tissue paper to the entire bottle

• stick on the black tissue paper to the lid

• glue on all of the details

(we used hot glue to make sure all the accessories stuck well)

Kid Christmas Tree Wrap Race...

even clean up is fun!...

(i spy a BYB pirate ship tee!! : )

all ya need is:

• green crepe paper

• tin foil scrunched to make a headband

• large gold bow for a star or cut out card stock paper angels

to attach to headband for the "tree topper"

We did the Tree Wrap race at our party.

I walked over to say hi to our other child & he had been

turned into a snowman!!...

The Wrap Races are hilarious!!

Snowman Wrap Race all ya need is:

•roll of toilet paper

• construction paper accessories

• masking tape to stick on accessories

Cute ideas if you need to entertain some homebound kids

over the next week or two! : )

addressed & mailed, sticky notes with scribbled "to-do's" all

over the place, etc.

what are you up to this weekend?

we have a weekend with NO plans other than

a couple of soccer games...

yahoo!

sometimes that is just the kinda weekend i need!

feeling inspired to do some home projects.

maybe some fun kid projects too.

we have 5 or so tomato cages that sadly

did not get used this year for tomatoes.

but wouldn't this be a fun & easy way to use them?...

Instructions:

To make one, set up the cage as shown above.

To form the head, use duct tape to secure the rounded prongs of the cage.

Thread the lights through the cage, and secure them with twist ties.

(could be cute for daytime sans lights too!)

For each arm, ball up two socks and duct-tape them to a stick,

placed in the ground.

Add marker or pinned-on craft foam facial features to a white twin sheet,

then drape it over the structure.

as a girl from a small town in Alabama,

SEC football is part of life!

in kindergarten on the first day,

we had to declare if we were for

Alabama or Auburn!

(not to the teacher...but to each other)

It was etched in stone from that day on

"which side you were on."

We were still great friends with

"the other side"

To me, it just made them a little mysterious

or something...I mean why would they be for

the other team?? ; )

my grandfather, my parents, my sister & I

all gradutated from the

University of Alabama.

This is our Homecoming weekend

& I so wish we were gonna be there!!

i don't know about you

but i am sooo happy that it is friday!!

yes, i know that we just had a long vaca weekend...

it was fun & great to play & visit with family

but relaxing it was not.

we were on the go!

so many fun things to do & see!

not to mention...

1 sliced open bottom of kid foot (probably needed stitches)

1 kid who came down with 103 fever & bronchitis

1 kid who BROKE ARM!

1 very bad weather day with tornados while driving home

1 pull over & stay in hotel for the night, because weather was that bad!

1 kid who had a MOUNTAIN OF MAKE-UP HOMEWORK

from 2 1/2 missed school days!!!

(1st grade...is this normal?!?)

1 FUN BYB show last night!

+ all of the other life & work stuff & catching-up from being gone

TGIF!!!

if i could have a theme song follow me around

(like in the movies)

i would put this one with my life from the past week

it is a such a nice melody

but a busy busy one

a good pace to match all of my footsteps & driving

would help all of the crazy things that happened

to just kinda roll off & help me keep on going & enjoying life

so i have set a new goal for myself...

to run a 5k!

i have never been a runner, but i have also never

been one to turn down a challenge

so, i have decided to do the

Savannah Bridge Run!

with the tagline of:

"run, walk, or crawl"...

at least i know that "crawling" is an option!! ; )

i also hope that my "public" declaration here,

will hold me accountable for my goal!

but i really didn't mean it whole heartedly

we now have 2 FULL TIME STUDENTS

for the first time!!!

where does time go??

they are getting so big!

no more rushing around every other hour to

they both start at the same time now

& end at the same time

& are there for 7 HOURS!!!

don't know whether to cry

or to celebrate??

Creative, energetic, optimistic, and compassionate. These are only a few of the traits that describe me, Evan Watson, Back Yard Baby’s first intern. As a rising senior at Sewanee: The University of the South with a degree in Cultural Anthropology and Psychology, this internship was a great experience for me.
   I cherish my home town of St. Simons Island, Georgia and feel pride in my good ol’ southern ways. However, there is also a strong passion within me for traveling and experiencing diverse lifestyles.
   In the fall of 2010 I followed my desire to travel and studied in Barcelona, Spain. I was given the opportunity to live with a Spanish family, experiencing the proud and unique culture as a part of myself. Typical of any new beginning, I was originally terrified leaving my small town ways to live in a foreign speaking city where I did not know a soul. Four months later, I felt a sense of belonging and was not ready to leave all of the connections that I had made.
   After returning home, I craved more of that excitement, but also wanted to be near my friends and family. So, I asked Winslett, my cousin-in-law, if I could move to The Historical Savannah and assist her with BYB. She was completely open to the idea, and had me help with inventory control, customer databases, social marketing, design printing, and most importantly, keeping up with the energetic boys, who are the backbone of this clothing company. These compiled together taught me more patience, better organization, and more efficient time management than any other job ever has; I will one day need many of these skills when I pursue my entrepreneurial dreams.
   With this opportunity, my future appears more clearly and I see that anyone can use their true passions to build a thriving company out of their own back yard. With two small boys at home whom she did not want to leave for work, Winslett confidently formed this clothing company with the guide of her strongest passions: art, computer design, childhood enjoyment, and creating happiness in all. Seeing her success has proved to me that I can take my own passions of healthy living, diverse relationships and helping others to create my own Women’s Wellness Center where I can counsel others..
   Thank you Winslett and BYB for filling my summer with exciting opportunities, self development, and mind stimulation. Working with Back Yard Baby has not only given me the satisfaction of helping a business grow and prosper; it has also allowed me to see that I must and can follow my own dreams. My future after college is a little clearer now that I’ve spent some time with you. Good luck with future success and congratulations to the next person who gets to take on this position.

the boys also learned a couple of new games over the weekend.

we taught them the hangman game on the paper table cloth

i love that they are getting old enough to play & enjoy some fun new games with us!

Robin & I grew up in the same small town of Jasper, Alabama.

Back then it was the type of place where

you waved at every other car you passed,

(population: 18,000)

where we never locked our doors,

we left our car keys in our parked cars,

we had lemonade stands unattended by grown ups,

we played outside & roamed around wherever we wanted

until it started to get dark...you get the picture!

Seems idyllic looking back now.

Robin is quite a bit younger than me, but her older brother

was always so much fun to be around! He always had us laughing!

This is one he taught me back then

that my little boys think is so funny now...

"You can pick your friends

and you can pick your nose

but you can't pick your friend's nose!"

"Warning: Do Not Take Me Seriously"

Growing up in a small Southern town definitely planted a seed for Back Yard Baby. Do you think Jasper, Alabama influenced your creative writing? Or do you think it is just in your genes??

Growing up in a small Southern town I was surrounded by great storytellers and great stories worth telling. I wanted to learn how to read so badly in kindergarten, another student actually taught me how (Shout out to Lisa Ivey, thanks dawg!) I've had my nose in a book since then. Writing is literally pouring back out everything you've experienced in life, so I definitely think living in Jasper influenced my writing. Looking at many of my childhood friends now, I wonder if there was something in the water. Several of them have grown up to be writers, artists, dancers, musicians and film-makers.

What was the launching point for Robin's Chicks?

We were living hundreds of miles away from our families and I felt like they were missing out on the hilarious things going on in our house. I started sending out mass emails several times a week to keep them updated. My family started forwarding my emails to their friends or asking me to resend the same story over and over again. I decided to start a blog to have everything in one place, and also it meant I no longer had to email anybody. (Win/win.) I started the blog and soon after started my humor column.

Not only are you a hilarious & inspirational "Mama" writer, but you are a fantastic cook! What is a sure fire recipe that the whole family will love...even down to the pickiest eater? (cause I have one of those. So this is really more of a HELP ME! question.)

Ham steaks, mashed taters and oven-roasted broccoli. (Toss broccoli florets with olive oil, garlic salt & lemon pepper. Bake on a foil lined sheet at 400 for about 15 minutes, until the edges start to turn brown.) My kids will eat the HAIL out of some broccoli, I have no explanation for this. My oldest dips everything in ketchup, but what do I care? When every member of my family eats the same meal, without complaining or asking if they can go to bed instead, I feel like Harry Potter must have felt after he *killed Voldemort when I cook a meal. (*Spoiler alert? Surely, ya'll knew this?)

School is about to start again. What is your opinion? a. Excited! b. Ugh. c. A little of both? And why?

I would vote for year round school if anyone would let me. Not more days of school per year, just spaced out with more breaks. During the school year I hate having to get up early and rush around, my kids like to loll around in the morning. But too much lolling can drive a woman to *drink. Just ask the owner of my local liquor store. (*I feel it's important here to note that you can NOT buy wine at the grocery store in Mississippi. You must go to the liquor store, and there is just no way to look like a good mother with three kids in a liquor store. I don't care how infrequently, or um... frequently you are there. This is also something I'd like to vote on.)

You are an inspirational writer, whether you know it or not! It is so refreshing to read your funny stories and know that I am not alone in what goes on in my house with young kids. What is more important to you when writing, inspiration to other young Moms or just pure funny?

I've found that the only thing that matters in writing, or life, is truth. When I am honest in my writing, about the good, the bad, and the ugly, that's when readers feel connected. There is no funny without truth. If you can read something and say, “YES!! That! That EXACT THING she said! I've felt that!” then it's funny. If you can't at least relate to the emotion being expressed, then there is no truth, and therefore, no funny. (I feel like I just did math.)

When I am honest about the ridiculous things my children do, I hope other moms are able to laugh at me and find the funny in their own homes. When I let my faults and my weaknesses show, I hope my readers realize that God's grace is enough to carry us through. I want parents to read my columns and think, “If she can make it through this day and still be laughing, then so can I.”

I've written two books, the first is a completed collection of non-fiction humor. The second book is about how my relationship with God has deepened as a result of ~~reaching rockbottom~~ becoming a mother, there is still PLENTY of funny. (Trust me on this.) I am in the editing, revising & rewriting stage with my agent. Hopefully this book will be completed by the end of the year and ready to sell! my latest "from...Bud" came in the mail last week.

i guess my mom & dad have always tried to instill a

hard working virtue in me.

one of my first gifts that i can remember getting on Christmas

was this little school desk.

my sister & i thoroughly entertained ourselves & "worked very hard"

at squeezing my hamsters

through that little ink well hole over & over!

not sure that is what our parents had in mind for the desk.

but we sure did seem to find that to be fun!

kids can be kinda weird what they find to be interesting, can't they?

poor Lolly & Dolly! (...the hamsters...don't worry they survived)

now this little desk is in my kids' playroom.

and now our youngest little boy is

begging for a hamster!!

i don't think i am as brave as i was when i was 5 at handling

small squirmy rodent (and reptile!) critters...

makes me cringe a little just to think of it.

but i do think they are kinda cute to look at

(...ok, maybe i am still a little weird? : )

so, i told him that if he saved his piggy bank money he could buy one

and only if he would be responsible for taking care of it.

he has been "working extra hard" at feeding and

giving water to our dogs all summer

to prove that he can handle the responsibility.

he has also worked hard & saved enough money now for

the super duper cage that he picked out,

(lemonade stand + allowance from his chores + some he had saved)

complete with the hamster racetrack that comes with a hamster race car

that will roll around the track! yikes! what have i created?!

guess the apple does not fall far from the tree, as they say!

well, at least he is getting a "hard work" lesson instilled in him, right?

you gotta work hard for what you want in life.

and anything that is worth doing takes a lot of effort!

if you are a blog fanatic like me,

you are probably already familiar with joanna goddard's popular blog.

as a young mom & professional magazine writer,

she writes about a wide variety of topics

from pop culture to family to travel

& almost anything in between.

i hope that you will enjoy her recent series on

"My Balance"

joanna invited a handful of popular bloggers & business ladies who

work part- to full-time for themselves from home,

and are married with young children.

and asks them basically

how to you dot it all?

how do you organize your life from day to day?

it has been very interesting & encouraging for me!

as I was just writing about my balance being off the other day,

it is nice to read that i am not alone in the daily juggle.

as a working mom with small children,

my schedule changes wildly from day to day!

maybe one of these years i will be able to get on a regular routine?

my day starts at a different time each day:

• 5:00am this day, 8:00am that day, 6:30am, etc...

basically the later that i can sleep the better!

...but then there are less hours in my day to accomplish "the list."

for me, i seem to get more accomplished starting out each day by

writing down a list of

• what i want to accomplished:

"clean! is always on the list. i should start writing fold laundry!

bikram yoga, jog, pay bills, etc (...all of the not fun stuff for me...so sad)."

• BYB work:

"order inventory, print production, work on new designs, call so & so, email so & so" etc.

• i jot down things we may need:

"milk, bread, laundry detergent..."

• sometimes i plan out a weekly dinner plan

& list all groceries that we will need. i may print this out to help:

• i try to include not only the "necessary" things

but also "fun" things that i may want to do or to get on my list:

"paint hallway (...interior design is a BIG hobby. love it!), water plants,

work on flower window boxes, call so & so, write so & so a note & mail it, take boys to the pool,

teach boys how to tie shoes, plan dinner with friends, date with hubs,

check out knew books for boys at the library...yes we

have made BIG progress from these days!!"

• daily appointments, practices, scheduled things:

"hair-cuts, swim team practice, dentist, meeting, kid drop off or pick up,

things off of the calendar, etc."

it is a rambling list that typically starts with order but ends up

more like a jot it down when thought of list

that gets added to each day & takes about a week to scratch

everything (or almost everything) off.

but it feels so good to see the whole thing ~~scratched off~~
(when that actually happens!)

i just squeeze all of the things in whenever i can find time

throughout the day,

which usually ends around midnight.

after writing this post, i want to move to costa rica

& give "list making" to the birds!!

so i think i will plan a small little get-together

with wine & yummies...

of course i have more fun planning the table & setting than the menu
